There's no doubt, Australia loves a race! Whether it be V8 Super Cars grunting around a mountain, million dollar maxi yachts hurdling giant seas down the east coast or white line fever in the swimming pool. With spring in the air and the smell of freshly mown lawn infecting the suburbs, it's time for the horses to have their time in the spotlight.
Spring is all about horse racing and the carnivals atmosphere comes with the season. Although the horses might have center stage, the real party is trackside and us humans get to have all the fun!
Every September, race tracks around the country awake from a sleepy winter and fire up into the place to be. The atmosphere reaches fever pitch on the first Tuesday in November when the whole country stops to watch the Melbourne Cup, one of the world's richest horse races. Don’t believe me? You’d better get along to a race track and find out what all the fun is about.
Sydney’s Royal Randwick hosts some of the best parties of the Spring with BBQ’s, live bands and DJ’s, fashion parades; oh and did I mention horse races! For the blokes the races are all about beer and betting; a bit of luck and a smart punt and you’ll be whipping your way well into the evening. For the ladies it’s about champagne and glamour and Royal Randwick’s “Princess Playground” catch phase seems to have attracted plenty of interest from both genders in recent years.
Events to catch are Ladies Day (26 September) and The Carousel Garden Party (3 October). General admission starts at $20 but if you really want to get into the party, get the special events tickets and make a winning day of it!
